Meadville Founder's Day was celebrated by unveiling 3 Historic Markers
for the Trail of History. Although Founder's Day is actually May 12, the
celebration was rescheduled for May 20 to coincide with the dedication
of the newly renovated Kepler Hotel.
The first marker was unveiled by Meadville Mayor Richard Friedberg and
Meadville Area Chamber of Commerce Director Charlie Anderson. It is located
on the west side of Diamond Park at Cherry Street.

The marker reads: CHAMBER OF COMMERCE founded in 1807 as
the Society for the Encouragement of Domestic Manufactor and the Useful
Arts, the third oldest Chamber of Commerce, met here in the old log coutrhouse.
Led by Crawford Messagger Editor Thomas Atkinson and Holland Land Co.
agent Roger Alden.
A second marker was unveiled about a block away on Center
Street, between Diamond Park and Park Avenue. It celebrates Religious
Diversity and was sponsored by the First Christian Church of Meadville
as part of their one hundredth anniversary celebration. It was unveiled
by Meadville Mayor Richard Friedberg and First Christian Church elder
Larry Williams.

The marker reads: FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH Reflecting the
diversity of early religious life, the first church here was the Central
or Second Presbyterian acquired in 1904 by the Christian Church. In 1983
a new sanctuary was built on M. Main Ext. & the Landmark brick Church
razed.
The third marker was unveiled on Market Street as a part
of the dedication of the newly remodeled Kepler Hotel. Speakers included
General Contractor and Project Leader. Also, Mr. Kepler, whose grandfather
built the original hotel, spoke about the history of the Kepler family
and his reminiscences of growing up while living in the hotel.

The marker reads: THE KEPLER HOTEL The landmark Kepler Hotel,
built in 1890, enlarged in 1923, served the community for 60 years. The
Kepler family had operated hotels since 1812 at Wookcock, Venango &
Titusville before coming to Market Square in 1875. Revitalized 2003 by
Meadville Redevelopment Authority as part of Impact Meadville Project.
